Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first Real Time Session. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first Real Time Session.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is designed to provide an overview of the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus, clinical signs, and home care.

Course Description:
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a relatively common problem in small animal practice. The prospect of long term diabetic care can be very intimidating to owners, as a higher level of management and monitoring is required compared to other conditions. An educated and well-trained staff can help calm these concerns and promote optimal long term care. This course will cover the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this condition with an emphasis on client education and communication.
This course will consist of one (1) two (2) hour Real Time Session, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to be considered for a course certificate of completion.

About the Instructor: Thomas (Tom) Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and works in both a general practice and an emergency practice in the San Francisco East Bay area. He is currently working towards becoming boarded in canine and feline practice (ABVP).
Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session September 17): Canine and Feline Diabetes
Recommended reading (prior to the September 17 Real Time Session): recommended, though not required, that participants read the background materials for this condition in the course library.
Content: The session will begin with discussion of the function of the normal pancreas, how diabetes develops, and its clinical consequences. We will cover the basic features and nursing care of diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus as it pertains to the veterinary staff and assisting the veterinarian with a DM patient. The emphasis of the discussion will be on client education and long term management of these patients.
CE HOURS: 1.5
Tuition: $30 ($27 early bird if registered by August 27, 2012).
*Students currently enrolled in and taking at least 2 classes or 5 units at an AVMA accredited or CAAHT approved Veterinary Technician Program may be eligible to receive a 50% discount off the regular rate for this course (upon verification of student status).
** To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.
